Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg has announced a temporary shutdown of key services on WordPress.org, the open-source platform central to the WordPress software, plugins, and community. The announcement raises uncertainty about the platform’s long-term stability, with Mullenweg suggesting services may not resume until sometime in 2025.

The shutdown includes a pause on new account registrations, new plugin and theme submissions, plugin reviews, and photo directory submissions. However, forums and localisation services will remain operational.

Mullenweg cited ongoing legal battles with WP Engine as a significant distraction, saying his time, energy, and resources are currently consumed by defending against legal challenges.

IDC Research Manager Michele Rosen expressed concern, noting the shutdown might cause enterprise users to reconsider their reliance on WordPress.

“It’s such a shame to watch a leader in the open-source community repeatedly sabotage his own project,” Rosen said. She added that while WordPress CMS remains free under the GPL license, dependency on plugins and themes tied to WordPress.org could pose functional challenges for some configurations.

Peter Zeitsev, founder of Percona, warned that a prolonged shutdown could stifle WordPress development and potentially drive the community toward alternative hubs. He also raised concerns about governance and whether stakeholders can continue trusting Mullenweg’s stewardship.

While WordPress.com, Automattic’s commercial hosting service, remains unaffected, ripple effects from the shutdown are expected to impact both community and enterprise users. For now, the future of WordPress.org hinges on the resolution of Mullenweg’s legal disputes and his ability to refocus on community leadership in the new year.
