The (NCA) has addressed public concerns regarding high mobile data prices and the recent classification of MTN as a Significant Market Power (SMP).

In a press release, the NCA emphasized that the measures taken are designed to ensure fair competition and protect consumer interests in ‘s telecommunications sector.

The NCA acknowledged the criticism circulating on but reiterated that the SMP designation for MTN is part of its regulatory responsibilities. This classification is aimed at creating a level playing field and enhancing consumer choice rather than penalizing the telecom giant. The Authority is committed to promoting competitive practices and fostering an environment that benefits all consumers.

Key regulatory actions include implementing asymmetric interconnection rates, enforcing tariff parity, and maintaining technology neutrality. These steps are intended to encourage competition, spur innovation, and ensure that other telecom operators can compete effectively, thereby supporting sustainable and improved service quality.

Moreover, the NCA highlighted Ghana’s performance in a recent report from cable.co.uk, which ranked the country third in Africa and second in West Africa for the lowest mobile internet data prices. This report, reviewed as part of the NCA’s routine billing monitoring, underscores Ghana’s competitive pricing in the regional context.

The NCA reassured consumers of its ongoing commitment to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure reliable internet access and fair pricing in the telecommunications sector.
