Ghana has emerged as the top exporter of digitally delivered services on the African continent, according to the latest World Trade Organization (WTO) estimates. The report, which analyzed trade data from 2022 to 2023, revealed that Ghana’s digital service exports reached $6.2 billion in 2022, accounting for 19% of the sub-Saharan market.
Ghana, alongside Morocco and South Africa, contributed over half of the region’s exports of digitally delivered services. The WTO projects a significant rise in Ghana’s digital service exports in 2024, following a 30% growth in the previous year.
This growth is attributed to the government’s continued efforts to develop the digital economy, though the report highlights that further advancements will require policy and regulatory reforms to enhance connectivity, affordability, and digital skills development.
Nearly half of Africa now enjoys improved digital infrastructure, but the WTO stresses the need for reforms to ensure affordable digital communication and better prepare businesses for opportunities in the digital economy.
