Ghana has achieved Tier 1 status in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), positioning itself as a global leader in cybersecurity. The highest ranking, Tier 1, recognizes nations that serve as role models in cybersecurity practices.
Ghana scored 99.27%, demonstrating leadership in Africa, second only to Mauritius. This marks a significant improvement from the country’s 86.69% score in 2020.
The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) attributed this success to key developments, including the implementation of the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), the licensing of cybersecurity professionals, and the protection of critical digital infrastructure. The score also reflects progress in the areas of Legal, Technical, Organizational, Capacity Building, and Cooperation.
Ghana’s efforts have been bolstered by initiatives such as the Joint Cybersecurity Committee, which strengthens coordination between public and private sectors.
Internationally, Ghana has gained recognition as a hub for cybersecurity training and collaboration, hosting global programs in partnership with organizations like the EU, World Bank, and ECOWAS. These initiatives underline Ghana’s commitment to securing its digital ecosystem and setting a benchmark for cybersecurity excellence globally.
