Most of them are legitimate <a href=\"https:\/\/enspirefx.com\/fr\/articles\/tag\/business\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag\" title=\"More on Business\">business<\/a> owners, but occasionally, a scammer sneaks through. If you do a lot of remote work, or get a lot of your clients online, this article is for. At first, everything seemed genuine, but as the conversation progressed, red flags started appearing. She provided a reference website and asked for a quote, mentioning that her budget was &#8220;SUPER FLEXIBLE&#8221;\u2014a potential red flag since real clients usually have a set budget.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9\"]{font-style:normal;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9 mark.kt-highlight, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9\"] mark.kt-highlight{font-style:normal;color:#f76a0c;-webkit-box-decoration-break:clone;box-decoration-break:clone;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9 img.kb-inline-image, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9\"] img.kb-inline-image{width:150px;vertical-align:baseline;}<\/style>\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading237619_d5e824-c9\">I didn&#8217;t suspect any foul play at this point, thinking our new U.S <a href=\"https:\/\/enspirefx.com\/fr\/articles\/tag\/landing-page\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag\" title=\"More on Landing Page\">landing page<\/a> was converting already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Too Good to Be True<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I sent her a project quote, breaking down the cost and scope. She responded enthusiastically, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Sounds good! After reviewing the price quote, I think we should continue with the next step.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything seemed normal at this point\u2014until she asked to pay with a check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Please give me your payment information so that I can issue your deposit payment in the form of a check mailed and addressed to your U.S.-based individual\/company\/entity or your partner.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the first major red flag. Checks are rarely used for online transactions anymore, and legitimate businesses typically pay via direct bank transfers, credit cards, or digital payment platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Scam Becomes Clear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I replied that we only accept direct bank transfers and <a href=\"https:\/\/enspirefx.com\/fr\/articles\/tag\/mobile-money\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag\" title=\"More on Mobile Money\">Mobile Money<\/a> payments, which are very common in here in <a href=\"https:\/\/enspirefx.com\/fr\/articles\/tag\/ghana\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag\" title=\"More on Ghana\">Ghana<\/a> and among our typical client-base \u2014 Ghanaian business owners and the Ghanaian diasporan. Her response was filled with excuses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;I recently had issues with my bank account&#8230; $14,600 was deducted, and my bank advised me to stop issuing wire transfers&#8230; PayPal is also not an option.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Then came the scammer&#8217;s real intention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Do you have anyone in the U.S. who can receive a check on your behalf? It could be a relative, brother, sister, or colleague. I&#8217;ll mail the check to them, and they can forward the funds to you.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a classic overpayment scam. If I had agreed, she would have sent a fraudulent check for an inflated amount, then asked me to send a portion of the money to her \u201cconsultant\u201d before the check bounced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How I Responded and Cut Off the Scam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, it was clear that this was a scam, so I sent a firm response:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;We have U.S. clients who pay for services via direct bank transfers and Mobile Money. If the only way you can pay is via check, we won&#8217;t be able to proceed. Kindly find another web developer.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After this, she stopped responding\u2014confirming my suspicions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This experience reinforced some important lessons for web designers and freelancers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Be Wary of Unusual Payment Requests<\/strong> \u2013 Legitimate clients will not insist on outdated payment methods like mailed checks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Too Much Enthusiasm Can Be a Red Flag<\/strong> \u2013 Scammers often accept quotes without any negotiation or questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fake Urgency &amp; Overpromises<\/strong> \u2013 The scammer pushed a strict deadline and claimed to have a flexible budget\u2014classic scam tactics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>They Avoid Direct Communication<\/strong> \u2013 She refused to call, claiming to be in Asia, which is a common excuse scammers use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trust Your Instincts<\/strong> \u2013 If something feels off, verify the client&#8217;s identity before proceeding.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Scammers are getting more sophisticated, but by staying cautious and recognizing the warning signs, web designers can protect themselves from falling into their traps. As a designer, you likely already have a lot of experience working remotely, let this guide you. Clients are the same regardless of where they come from.
